DUTCH DESIGN WEEK 2025

Artist in Residence at the Shoe Quarter - Dutch Design Week 2025

The Schoenenkwartier in Waalwijk offers an Artist in Residence program where makers have the space to experiment with materials, techniques and new forms of shoe design. In our Shoe Lab, designers, artists and researchers work together with experts and producers on innovative projects that focus on craft, innovation and sustainability.

During Dutch Design Week 2025, we will show what this program makes possible. Six current residents present their research: from circular design and material experiment to film and performance. Together they show how versatile the footwear field is - and how important it is to give space to new talent.

Examples of research

  • Brandon Chow explores the cultural significance of sneakers in film.

  • Isabel Wolfs exposes the hidden anatomy and ecological impact of athletic shoes.

  • Judith Sanders uses weaving techniques to restore and transform discarded footwear.

  • Tommy Dawson experiments with form and durable materials.

  • Michel Gallus examines the role of leather in a changing design practice.

  • Marco B connects artisanal techniques with contemporary design.

Future residents

Schoenenkwartier's Artist in Residence program is both a stage and a workshop. Makers get access to a professionally equipped lab, guidance from mentors and the chance to make their work visible on platforms such as Dutch Design Week. This is how we build the future of shoes together: from heritage to experimentation, from prototype to presentation.
