New artwork
The winning art play object at the northern center entrance of Waalwijk is The Bridge, designed by Gijs Assmann. The inspiring art play object will be realized behind the Schoenenkwartier, at the northern center entrance. This artwork, called The Bridge, was designed by visual artist Gijs Assmann and was chosen as the winning design. The Bridge is a two-person swing made of recycled stainless steel, with a playful shape that resembles a shoe last. Its polished surface reflects and distorts its surroundings. With this, Waalwijk aims to create an inviting and surprising entrance, where art, play and awareness come together in a unique way.
Developing the design follows this fall, together with 19 classes from grades 7 and 8 in the Shoe Quarter. During a class series on the leather and shoe industry, the students will contribute their creative ideas. This creates a work of art that not only stands firm, but also inspires. This co-creation project, in collaboration with the Schoenenkwartier and Kunstencentrum Waalwijk, will result in a final design to be completed by the end of 2025.
